Every teacher has a style. The way you phrase a question, the notation you insist on, how deep a worked solution should go, when "simple" really means back to basics: it's what makes your material yours. On its own, the AI Exercise Builder writes in a sensible but generic voice. Generation Preferences let you teach it your style once, so everything it generates comes out sounding like you.
As a bonus, you stop repeating yourself. Instead of typing the same instructions into every request, you save them once and they apply automatically, a real time-saver when you're building a lot of content.
What a Generation Preference is
A Generation Preference is a short, named piece of guidance you save and reuse across your AI Sessions. Think tone, subject context, difficulty conventions, or how you want solutions presented. Each has a Name so you can recognise it later, and Your guidance, the actual instruction the AI follows. You build up a small personal library of these and pick which ones apply.
Where to find it
Open the AI Exercise Builder and look at the message box. The Generation Preferences button sits right underneath it, in both Single Exercise and From Materials.
Create your first preference
Click Generation Preferences, then + Add preference.
Give it a Name.
Write Your guidance in plain language, as if briefing a teaching assistant.
Tick Apply by default on new AI Sessions to switch it on automatically.
Save.
See it in action
Both requests below ask for the same kind of thing (the derivative of a power function), but the second has a Worked Example Detailed Solution preference on.
Without it, the solution is correct but brief:
Switch the preference on…
…and the same request now walks through every step, naming the rule and explaining the reasoning:
Same effort from you. Output that matches how you teach.
Manage which preferences apply
Each preference has a toggle for the current session, a Default badge if it auto-applies, and edit / delete actions. The counter on the button tells you how many will apply to your next message.
💡 Good to know
You can adjust preferences mid-session: turn one on (or add one and toggle it on) and it applies to your next messages straight away.
Editing a preference you haven't used yet this session also takes effect right away.
The one exception: editing a preference already applied earlier in the session only kicks in on your next AI Session, so exercises you've already generated stay consistent.
Once applied in a session, a preference can't be switched off again for that session.
Examples of preferences
You can add anything in your preferences. Preferences can be small or long, it depends on your goal. Make sure to split them up in a way such that you can switch them on/off for different cases.
Some simple examples to show how you can write preferences for difficulty level, conventions and feedback structure.
Difficulty Preferences: "When I state 'simple' as a level for a topic, really go to the basics of that topic."
Symbol Conventions: "Always use t as the standard symbol for formulas (instead of x)."
Worked Example Detailed Solution: "Make the steps in the detailed solution really detailed and go over each of the steps carefully. The goal is to really help the student understand each of the steps needed to get to the solution. Assume they are reading this when they are just starting to learn the topic at hand."
