For every course there is knowledge which a student should already know. However, this is not the reality since students either forget knowledge they learned or your group of students has a diverse background where not everyone has walked the same path to your course.
To help you as teacher focus on teaching the core course content, we added an easy way for you to add prior/prerequisite knowledge to your course.
This allows your students to go to that content and learn/recap at their own pace while you focus on teaching the new course content.
How can I add prior knowledge to my course?
By default no prior knowledge is related to your course. To add prior knowledge you first create a separate course which contains the prior knowledge. This course can contain anything you want (subjects with interactive lessons, subject with practice exercises, self tests, formative tests, etc.).
The second step is to add this course to your main course as "Prerequisite Course". You can do this by going to the "edit course information" via the following steps:
Go to the edit screen of your course and click on "Edit Course Properties".
Scroll down to your Course Settings and select the course with prior knowledge in the "Prerequisite Course" field and save the changes.
WARNING: be aware that when adding a Prerequisite Course, the students will be added to that course as students. This means any teaching member in the Prerequisite Course will be able to see the student information including the learning behavior in the Prerequisite Course.
How will my students be able to access the prior knowledge?
When you add the Prerequisite Course to your course, students will see a button on the course overview page.
When they click the button they will be navigated to the course you linked and they will gain access to that course.
The first time they do this they will get a popup explaining them they will be enrolled into that course, so that you as teacher will be able to see how you are students doing on the prerequisite knowledge if they interact with the content.
NOTE: as teacher can you use the same button to go to the Prerequisite Course. You will keep the same role you already have and it allows you to quickly navigate between courses and for example go to the monitor dashboard of your prerequisite course.
How can students navigate back to the main course?
A student can easily navigate back to the main course, since in the prerequisite course they will see a button "Show follow up courses" which will list the follow up courses they are enrolled in.
NOTE: the follow up courses will be user specific. It will only show the follow-up courses the student is already enrolled in in Grasple.
