During editing of an exercise you generally only specify whether an answer is correct or incorrect. In addition you can assign a percentage of the maximum points to an answer or answer rule as well. When a student gives that answer (or their answer triggers that answer rule) they will get the percentage of maximum points you specified.

You can apply this to all answer types (Multiple Choice, Short Text Answer, Numeric and Math) and the percentages you specify are being used both in practice (i.e. subjects) and tests.

NOTE: you cannot use this functionality with conditional logic exercises at the moment.

In this article we will explain how to specify these percentages and how they are being applied during practicing and tests.

# How to specify the partial points percentage in exercises?

Go to the edit page of the exercise where you want to add partial points to an answer (rule). Depending on the type of exercise, you define partial points at different locations. See below a screenshot indicating where you can add partial points for each type of exercise.

## Multiple choice

## Short text answer and numeric

## Math (answer rules)

You can **change the percentage independent of the correct/incorrect label**. This gives you the freedom to give partial points and still indicate whether the answer is correct or incorrect.

You can now preview the exercise, give an answer which gives you partial points and check in the feedback whether it indicates that you "received" partial points.

**IMPORTANT**: by default the percentages is equal to 0 if the answer is incorrect and 100 if the answer is correct. If you switch between correct and incorrect, the percentage will automatically switch to 0 and or 100. However, if you change the percentage first, be aware that from that moment on **you have to manually adjust the percentage **when switching the correctness of the answer.

# How are the partial points percentages used?

The partial points are used in both practice sessions and tests. They are applied in the same way: the number of points a student receives equals the percentage times the maximum number of points.

Below you can see how this works in both a practice session and a test.

## Partial points in a practice session

During a practice session, students can only earn points at their first attempt. If they give a correct answer they get all the points, if they give the incorrect answer they get zero points. When you specified answer (rules) with partial points, they can receive a percentage of the maximum points if on their first attempt they give the answer (or trigger that answer rule).

Below you can see an example where the student received X out of Y points because they gave an answer which has partial points.

## Partial points in a test

During a test the final answer of a student on a question will be used to determine the number of points they receive. When you specified answer (rules) with partial points, they will receive a percentage of the maximum points if their given answer is equal to that answer (rule).

Below you can see an example where the student received X out of Y points because they gave an answer which has partial points.
