For most actions of students the platform offers detailed Learning Analytics in various ways. However, there is not always time to look into all these details. To make it easier to get a broad overview of the state of your course the dashboard of your course also offers an insights tab. In this article we explain what you can find here, how it can be useful, and how you can provide feedback.

As you can see, the tab is currently in Beta. This means it is under active development, and we welcome all feedback you have!

What does the page show?

The page is composed of three distinct blocks, focussing on three different questions:

  • Which subjects do students struggle with?

  • Which subjects are not finished by students?

  • What is the progress for my students in the course?

Which subjects do students struggle with?

This block focusses on the distribution of ratings of all subjects in your course:

The graph shows the middle 50% of the distribution of ratings, allowing you to quickly spot outlier subjects. Because the colors of the bars are based on the number of students that completed the subject you can quickly determine whether the measurement is already representative. On the right of the graph the platform will show subjects which are outliers.

Which subjects are not finished by students?

The second block shows how many students started a practice session for a subject, but never finished it:

This visualization can help you to spot subjects which are problematic for students, either because they do not understand the content or because the content contains an error.

What is the progress for my students in the course?

The last block shows the progress of student in the form of a heat-map:

Each column represent a subject, while each row represents a single student. This visualization allows you to quickly spot:

  • which subjects are hard for students (indicated by a red or yellow column),

  • which subjects are not done at all (indicated by a white column),

  • which students are struggling (indicated by a row with many red of yellow blocks).

All and all, this visualization can help you to get a quick overview of the progress of your course and take actions if needed.

How can you use it?

By answering specific questions through visualization we try to provide you with starting points to either:

  • take immediate actions to address particular issues,

  • take a more in-depth look into the other Learning Analytics in the platform to find out more about a particular statistics

To make the first action even easier each block also features a how other teachers user this data block which contains some background and concrete actions. Please feel free to contact us if you have additional suggestions to incorporate in this block.

To make the second action easier we added filters to the page to focus on specific course modules and / or specific groups of students:

In addition, all the subjects in the lists can be clicked to directly navigate to the detailed analytics pages.

How can you provide feedback?

We welcome all feedback about the usability and usefulness of this dashboard. Please feel free to contact us by e-mail or the chat icon in the bottom right corner of your screen!
