You can use decision tree exercises in Grasple to create adaptive exercises which give interactive feedback to students based on their answer instead of only static feedback.

This provides an adaptive way of learning for students and tools for you as teacher to guide them in the right direction without having to sit next to them.

Updates

Students are not always used to these type of questions and can get confused on what is happening with the new questions. Therefore we have updated the interface for students to inform them better while they interact with such an exercise.

These are the following updates:

Show if they only have one attempt above the answer input

Decision tree questions often have a single attempt (you as a teacher can configure this yourselves). To make sure a student knows this before answering, Grasple tells them they will only have one attempt in total for this question.

NOTE: This update is also applied to normal questions with one attempt only.

Show how many attempts they have left in the feedback

If a student has given an answer which is incorrect they might have attempts left to try again (using the feedback to their answer). Instead of only showing the number of attempts left on the top of the question, we now also show the number of attempts left in the feedback.

NOTE: This update is also applied to normal questions with one attempt only.

Show that a student can still score points on their next attempt

For a student it is not always clear that they can still score points on their next attempt. As a teacher you can configure this per question (read more on how to do this here).

As we show how many attempts they still have left, we also show if they can still score points.

NOTE: This update is also applied to normal questions with one attempt only.

Show that an exercise is a decision tree exercise

We added an information box telling the student they are doing a decision tree exercise. This should help them understand better what is happening and that follow-up questions will be shown to them based on their answers.

Show that a follow-up question is available

If a student has used all their attempts or has answered the question correctly, a follow-up question might be shown to them. As a teacher you can configure this (read more on how to do this) and this makes the decision tree so interesting, since you can give students specific follow-up questions.

We now inform a student they are done with the specific question and if a follow up question is shown.

Show that they have completed the whole exercise

When a student starts a decision tree exercise they don't know how many questions they will get (since it depends on their answers) and therefore might be confused about whether they are done with the exercise or not.

Therefore we have added feedback telling them they are done with the exercise at the bottom of the feedback of the last question they answered.
